Tips on Setting Up a Home Office:

Available space within your home? Home-based business owners report that locating the business in a separate area, away from everything else (including family members) is a key decision.

The office in your home should not be affected by loud, outside noises. The decision of where you work in your home can largely depend on the space you have available, as well as your own personal work style. When considering your work style begin with asking such questions as:

  • Do you work better with peace and quiet?
  • Can you share an office with a spouse?
  • Do you need a space where clients will be visiting your office?

Other important non-technological considerations are your chair and your desk configuration. Many home-based business owners spend an excessive amount of time researching their technological needs for hardware and software. However, benefits can be reaped from designing the workspace well.

Considering the number of hours that you will spend sitting in a chair at your workspace, it is essential to select a chair that is comfortable and gives good support as well. The computer workstation should be arranged so that the keyboard can be used comfortably. The home office should also allow for adequate workspace to organize multiple tasks.

Once you have determined the space and the type of work environment that will allow you to work at your highest level of productivity, then the next step is to consider the technology that is needed for your business and how it will fit within your space.

The first key technological component is your communication system. How you communicate with the world can affect a customer's decision on whether or not to choose you for their business solutions.

One of the first concerns will be the selection of the telephone configuration. Installing two phone lines is ideal - one business line with a separate private line installed in your office. Two lines can also be justified if you frequently use a fax machine or on-line Internet service for your e-mail.

Selecting the actual telephone handset has also become very interesting with the introduction of high-quality, portable phones that can let you freely walk around the office and the home. For those business owners that frequently find themselves at a computer keyboard, a lightw¡÷À,t telephone headset can be an effective means to reducing neck and back strain.

The next items for consideration are the computer hardware and software. It is advisable to consider selection of your software needs first, so that you can determine what kind of hardware you will need to support the software.

By selecting your software first you avoid selecting a computer that does not run fast enough, that does not have Ò_V€capacity to run the software, or will not allow use of multiple programs at one time. Ancillary items for consideration are printers, fax machines, copy machines, scanners, organizers, etc. (These will be discussed in a follow-up article.)

Starting off with the basics and doing it right can be vital to the success of your home-based business. Once you get the basics in place, you can then consider the selection of additional components.

Setting up the home office can be a different experience for different people. The combination of your own special product or service and your unique work style makes it important for you to tailor the space appropriately for your endeavor. These basic initial considerations can help you to create an environment that is comfortable and productive for you and at the same time projects a positive image to your customer base.
